Leona Lewis has debut number one on US album chart

X Factor winner Leona Lewis has debuted at number one on this week's US album chart, selling 205,000 copies of her Syco/J Records debut, Spirit.

Leona has become the first British solo artist in history to debut on top of the Billboard album chart. She is now planning to appear on American Idol in the week of 21st April.

Spirit was well ahead of this week's number two album, George Strait's Troubadour, which sold 59,000 copies in the runner-up position. Spirit sold 205,000 copies.

Billboard reports that the highest chart post for a solo British female artist came from Amy Winehouse's Back in Black, which reached number seven when it was released last year.
