Leona Lewis tops the US singles chart

The winner of The X Factor in 2006, Leona Lewis, has achieved a number one in the US singles chart with Bleeding Love.

Leona Lewis is become the first British woman to top the Billboard chart since Kim Wilde in 1987 with a cover version of the Supremes hit You Keep Me Hangin' On.

Bleeding Love was released in the US six weeks ago.

Leona wrote on her website that it was her "dream" to break America.

"I'm so excited to be able to spend some time in the US and showcase my music to everyone here.

"Its been a dream of mine since I was a little girl and I can't wait."
