The X Factor - Live Show 01/12/2007, The Best of BritishWe are now down to five acts all battling for a place in the semi-final. Tonight was billed as Best of British week and each act was to perform 2 songs. Another difference was that for the first time this series the act going home would be decided purely on the public vote. Kicking off tonight's show was Rhydian singing 'Somebody to Love'. The judges were impressed with his performance, Louis thought it was a 'passionate, powerful performance' and Simon said that at this stage it is all about proving you could survive in the real world as a star and based on that performance Rhydian could. Personally I didn't like it but then I love the original... The next act to take the stage was Hope with a frankly painful rendition of '2 Become 1'. Both Dannii and Louis said that there were a few tuning problems and Simon, their mentor, admitted that it wasn't a good enough performance and he thinks they are capable of better than that. They had better hurry up and show it then... Third up was Niki with 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'. Simon said it was one of her best performances so far whilst Dannii said it was 'much better than last week'. I thought it was a great song choice for her and she performed it well. Leon was up next with 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love'. I was praying he wouldn't try to dance too much tonight as it isn't his strong point! I thought he gave a really good performance. Louis absolutely loved it and said he thinks Leon is the most improved in the competition. Simon praised him too saying that he really saw his presence tonight and that he showed real confidence. He thinks he is doing incredibly well. The final act to sing their first song was Same Difference with 'Any Dream Will Do', complete with a choir of children. Sharon said that they are 'unique in this competition' and that there is a demographic that adores them. Dannii thought it was a great performance and Simon said it was the perfect song for them. It was all a bit too sickly sweet for me. Next up was the performance that I was dreading the most tonight - Hope massacring, sorry singing, 'We Will Rock You'. Luckily on the night it couldn't have been worse than their first performance. Louis said 'Freddie would be spinning in his grave', Sharon said it wasn't their best and both Dannii and Simon said it was much better than their first performance, but then that wasn't hard! Leon was next with his second song 'The Long and Winding Road'. In the VT Simon said it was a ridiculous song choice. I disagree and think Leon made a good job of it. Louis said it was a 'brilliant song choice' and that he absolutely nailed it. Simon thought the first 2/3rds of the song was mediocre and the third part was great. He also said he would see him in the semi-finals. Same Difference tackled 'Wake Me Up Before You Go Go' for their second number and it was, obviously, a very cheesy performance. Louis, never their greatest fan, said there were too many gimmicks and Sharon said the only thing we need now is some puppies and bubbles. She thought it was 'fantastic, cheesy and silly' but everybody loved it. I didn't... The penultimate performance tonight came from Niki with 'Fields of Gold'. Sharon and Dannii both thought it was a great performance and Simon thought it was good but not as good as her first song - I tend to agree with him. Last up was the one I have been waiting for - Rhydian singing 'I Vow to Thee My Country/World in Union'. I was expecting it to give me goosebumps. Unfortunately it didn't. The judges all loved it though with Louis declaring it a brilliant choice of song that absolutely worked and Simon saying it was outstanding.
