Prince William in the West MidlandsFrom the pool to the palacePrince William was once an avid water polo player - he first played while at Eton and was also on the St. Andrews' team while studying geography. He was considered an "attacking player" by those he played with. Today he is experiencing a different aspect of the game, however - as a spectator! He made an appearance at the Walsall Gala Baths, in Walsall, West Midlands for the English Schools' Swimming Association's 2008 Water Polo Championships. He was appointed patron of the organization in May of 2007. Shortly after being asked to be patron of the English Schools' Swimming Association last year, William remarked "Having swum and played water polo throughout my days at school and university, I am well aware of the great benefits and pleasure that can be derived from them. "As patron I look forward to doing whatever I can to help children and young people in England become more physically active and healthy through fostering their enjoyment of swimming, diving and water polo." While it seems to have taken a full year to find his stride as a working royal, he is now making good on that comment. Since receiving his RAF wings a few short weeks ago, Prince William has undergone a royal transformation ~ taking on what could be considered a full-time slate of royal appearances, he seems determined to prove he is serious about his job. Upon arriving (late!) in Walsall, William remarked "Hello, how is everything? Sorry to keep you waiting. I got here as quick as I could" to the waiting crowds. Many people snapped a photo of the 25 year old royal on their cell phones, and he made small talk with children on his way in. He was tasked with 'dropping the ball' to get the games off to an official start. Click here to discuss this story on the Royal Forum. |
