Queen Elizabeth attends Battle of Trafalgar commemoration

Queen Elizabeth and other members of the royal family attended the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

The Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805 was fought in just four hours off the southern coast of Spain - but Admiral Lord Nelson’s victory over a combined French and Spanish fleet led to Britain's to domination of the oceans for more than a century.

The British fleet also ended Napoleon Bonaparte’s plans to conquer Britain and enabled Britain to build its empire.

Admiral Lord Nelson, aboard the flagship HMS Victory, was mortally wounded by a sniper. As he died he murmured: “I have done my duty. I thank God for it.
