Prince Charles intervenes in Chelsea building project

In April 2009, Prince Charles publicly intervened in the plans to redevelop the Chelsea Barracks site in Chelsea.

Old military barracks are being torn down and the land will now be redeveloped by Qatari Diar, the development arm of the Qatari royal family.

They had asked Lord Rogers to design the new development and these plans were expected to get approved by the planning committee at Westminster Council this year.

But that was not before Prince Charles intervened, criticising the modernist glass-and-steel development and proposing an old-fashioned classical look for the site.

The prince has written to the prime minister of Qatar urging him to adopt his classical scheme designed by one of his favourite architects, Quinlan Terry. He also asked to be kept involved in talks over the future of the site.

In June, Prince Charles won the battle as Qatari Diar withdrew the Lord Rogers plans.

In a statement the owners said: "After extensive and ongoing consultations, Qatari Diar is withdrawing its current planning application for the site."
