Surreal conversations
Peter Evrard won the Belgian Idool competition - which was so popular the contestants had a police escort on occasions.
In World Idol, Peter sang the Nirvana hit Lithium.
Elias Rahbani, the Lebanese judge told Peter: "You have the look and the voice. but you have to work your voice more. OK?"
Peter replied politely: "Thank you for that advice."
Shona Fraser, the German judge told him that he needed a band. She did not add that the rules of World Idol precluded bands.
Simon Cowell then said: "This is the weirdest show that I have ever been on in my life. The show is called World Idol. We have the Lebanese music adviser telling someone doing a Kurt Cobain impersonation whether he's any good! I'm not being rude but it's just so weird. This would be Kurt Cobain's worst nightmare - because you are conforming - and rock and roll is about not conforming. So you are a wolf in sheep's clothing."
Peter was starting to have enough - and replied: "So a rock band doesn't make CDs because that's selling out?"
Pete Waterman, the British judge, joined in: "If you were serious you wouldn't be on this show."
At this point Peter could take no more - and retorted: "I'm very serious about my music - but you guys made it this way. The industry made it this way - so that young artists can't find another way any more where I'm from."
