Pop Idol will be returning to ITV1 soon, with a documentary on Gareth Gates, who was runner up in 2002, to Will Young in Pop Idol’s first series.
Gareth Gates, now aged 22, had a no 1 debut single with Unchained Melody. Other hits followed including covers of "Spirit in the Sky" and The Beatles "The Long and Winding Road," a duet he sang with former rival Young. Other hits included "Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake)", "Sunshine" and "What My Heart Wants to Say."
Since being dropped by his record label Sony BMG in April 2006, Gareth’s future plans are unclear, though his official website suggests that he hopes his new material will be released with a new label.
In his hay day Gareth Gates secured an endorsement deal with Pepsi, a book deal and was constantly in the news over reports over his personal life.
The documentary apparently follows his downward spiral after his limited success and Gareth hopes to show viewers “The real me”. Will it reveal all?
