I'd do anything - big bands and big voicesAfter Andrew Lloyd Webber's outburst last week the seven remaining Nancys are back as if nothing has happened. ALW stated that he had worked with all of them in the hope of showing them - and us - what he wants, but things did not get any clearer. The show opened with a bombastic version of "Who will buy" in which the band drowned out nearly all of the girls' voices. After that Jodie took the stage with "Luck be a lady tonight". ALW told us he wanted to see acting and that was what Jodie delivered. Denise van Outen stated that she liked Jodie's version better than Ewan McGregor's and Barry Humphries was glad that Jodie had kept her jokey side under wraps this time. Sarah followed with "Mr Bojangles", which she really made her own. Denise warned her not to overpronounce her words and Barry thought she had a limited range of expressions, but ALW said he'd asked to keep it small for tv - he was very happy with her performance. Rachel took the challenge set by Denise last week with "For once in my life" and delivered a very smiley performance, in which she didn't really look comfortable. Nevertheless the panel and ALW were positive about her efforts. Samantha performed "Sway" and her only challenge was that she needed to dance, which she did without any problems. ALW referred to her as "Sammy" again and said she was fabulous and the panel agreed, although sometimes it seemed to be more about her looks than her voice. The Olivers went to train a dance routine with a basketball - yes, it was High School Musical time. John Barrowman and Cameron Mackintosh chose Harry to be the next Oliver to go through, and in his VT Harry stated Martine McCutcheon would've been his ideal Nancy - guess he likes working with a lot of understudies.... The Olivers then sang "Breaking Free" but without basketballs. They clearly loved singing this song and it sounded very nice. Niamh was in the bottom two last week and now needed to show some strength in her performances, ALW stated. She sang "You can't take that away from me" and although she looked nervous at the start, she came out well. John said he'd happily pay to see her if she was Nancy and ALW thought she was great too, but then came out with the surprising comment that he was worried about her age and if her voice was strong enough. Last week there was a discussion about whether or not Jessie could take direction. Well, this week was easy for her because ALW didn't seem to have given her any. Apparently her own interpretation was good enough and she did do a great performance of "The man that got away". Not sure if it was the performance of the series, as Denise said, because her voice was wobbly at the beginning and her Irish accent was incredibly noticeable. Ashley came out in another horrible dress to do "Hey Big Spender" and she looked very confident in doing so. John and Denise liked it but Barry wasn't sure and ALW was a bit disappointed as she had been better in the one on one session with him. Nevertheless he was hoping she'd stay so he could work on that a bit more. Who will be in the bottom 2 is hard to predict, as this week there were almost no negative comments and the challenges set for the different girls gave us no clue either. In the results show tomorrow we'll be seeing the acting class with Barbara Windsor and it's a real shame we see this after we've had the opportunity to vote, as it might give us extra information on the girls' abilities. Tomorrow we will also hear which Nancy was chosen by the Olivers to sing a song with them. Until then, let us know your views on the forum. |
