Drunk chauffeur and paparazzi responsible for Diana's deathDiana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Fayed were unlawfully killed by the reckless driving of their chauffeur, Henri Paul, and the paparazzi who chased them, jurors in the inquest into their deaths decided today in London. The inquest heard from more than 240 witnesses and cost British taxpayers over £10 million. A two-year French investigation and a three-year inquiry by the former Metropolitan police commissioner Lord Stevens placed the blame solely on gross negligence by Henri Paul. Bar receipts from the the Ritz hotel, where Paul was the head of security, showed he had drunk two Ricards - equivalent to four single shots of whisky - before driving the princess and Fayed to their deaths. Blood tests revealed he was three times over the French drink-drive limit. Mohamed Al Fayed who has spent an estimated £15 million was in court to hear the verdict. Al Fayed had previously said he would accept the jury's verdict but he did not. In a statement read by his spokeswoman, he said: “It has been a long fight to uncover the truth. I am not the only person who says they were murdered. “Diana predicted she would be murdered and how it would happen. So I am disappointed. The verdicts will come as a blow to the many millions of people around the world who supported my struggle.” No evidence to support Al Fayed's allegations had been given to the inquest. A former butler to Diana, Paul Burrell, is now discredited as a liar and could face a criminal investigation for perjury following the completion of the inquest. Burrell admitted to The Sun he had not told the “whole truth” at the inquest. Prince William and Prince Harry said in a statement that they agreed with the verdict. "We agree with their verdicts, and are both hugely grateful to each and every one of them [the members of the inquest jury] for the forbearance they have shown in accepting such significant disruption to their lives over the past six months," a statement released by Clarence House said. |
