Comparing Chelsy to Kate again? How about a more honest view? Why is it that even when the press compliments Chelsy Davy--which is as rare an occasion for Chelsy as it is for Prince Harry--they come across as insults? The Times is the latest newspaper to offer its appreciation for Chelsy Davy, who they call the "sassiest lass to date a royal", side-by-side with the insulting bi-line "Queen of Tarts". Mind you, not even media darling Kate Middleton came out much better after being labeled as, "frumpy, dumpy and flat". According to the Times (who must have read the original article in Reveal Magazine) Chelsy Davy has told friends that the comparisons made between she and Kate Middleton need to stop. And who can blame her, as it's invariably Chelsy who is used as the prop to make Kate Middleton look all the better. But is this a fair or honest comparison? Hardly. Kate Middleton has become the media's darling; a thing Chelsy, for all the insults she's quietly suffered in the press, shouldn't envy because it's not likely to last. Especially if Kate continues to send her lawyers to the PCC every time she's photographed (usually smiling happily to the cameras) in public. Chelsy has had to deal with a just as intrusive paparazzi--at times even more so--yet she has never made the same complaint; perhaps in the realization that no law is actually being broken when her photo is taken in a public place. Kate is a nice girl, but she is not quite the perfect princess the media has built her up to be anymore then Chelsy is the hard-partying vamp she has been made out to be. So where did these labels come from? My guess is their representation has been given by virtue of which Prince they are dating because the Princes also have a distorted image of themselves presented in the media: Prince William as the ever-dutiful heir, Prince Harry as the Hooray Henry. I agree with Chelsy that the comparisons between she and Kate need to stop; at least in the way the media goes about it. Because it's not so much the comparisons that bother me as it's the constant suggestions that Chelsy, a post-graduate law student at Leeds who graduated with honors from the University of Cape Town, is some kind of dumb blonde bimbo when all evidence fails to support such an insult. Even a supportive article such as the Time's labels her as a "tart" with no better cause than Chelsy's fashionable clothing, the color of her hair and the size of her bust. If these two young women must really be compared then can't the media at least be fair and point out that Kate parties just as much--if not more than--as Chelsy, that Kate also dresses revealingly and that she is not as educated or as focused as Chelsy. And can't they give Chelsy the credit she deserves for--unlike Kate--proving herself well when it comes to handling not just a prince but the press attention he comes with? So, yes, three cheers for Chelsy who seems to love the man...not the attention. |
