BBC Apprentice series 1 final: Tim Campbell wins The ApprenticeThe finalists in the series, Tim and Saira, had to organize a party on luxury Thames riverboats, the Elizabethan and the Naticia. The candidates who had been fired earlier in the series were waiting in the boardroom. Tim and Saira could both choose three of them to help with the task. Tim chose Ben, Miriam and Sebastian. Saira chose James, Raj and Paul, the latter described by the narrator as "a surprising choice". And sure enough, Saira and Paul were soon arguing again! There were just three days to choose the theme, sell tickets, organize the entertainment and manage the event itself. Saira's team kept the costs down. James cadged 120 bottles of free Californian wine in return for agreeing a Californian road movie theme for the event. Paul was dispatched to Covent Garden to recruit entertainers. "There's just no talent about any more," he told the cameraman before confirming his point by failing to find any entertainers for the event - and retiring to a local bar for a drink or two. Tim's team decided to arrange a glittering fashion show and spent lavishly. Miriam had forgotten the lessons learned in the farmers' market and ordered £2,000 worth of Moët & Chandon champagne. Tim woke up on the morning of the show without having sold a single ticket. As a last resort the tickets were sold for £15 to students coming out of the their college lectures. Both teams had been given £5,000 seed money for the event. Tim's team came back with only £2,800. Saira had been much more careful with the cash and came back with £5,800. However, Sir Alan Sugar made a decision based on the candidates' performance throughout the series and he decided to name Tim as the recipient of a six figure salary as his apprentice. Sir Alan looked straight at Tim and told him: "You're hired!" Straight after the final there was an extra programme on BBC2, The Apprentice: You're Hired! Adrian Chiles talked to Tim and Sir Alan - as well as the other candidates who were reunited in the studio audience for the show. Tim payed special tribute to his mother who looked on proudly from the audience. Adrian Chiles asked James whether he would prefer a job with Sir Alan or a career in TV. James made clear he would have accepted the job with Sir Alan if he had won and would want any media work to contain a business element. |
