The Apprentice - BBC series 4 - week 2

Washerwomen

The teams were sent out to run a laundry for a day. Raef led the renaissance of Renaissance and beat the washerwomen from Alpha.

Jenny was the team leader at Alpha and spent an hour giving a seminar for the first hour but when it was time to fix a price to quote for 1,000 pieces of laundry at a hotel she plucked a number out of the air - £4.99 per item, about 25 times what the hotel had been paying before. She then set about bullying Lucinda.

Raef and Kevin quoted £556 for the same items and then allowed themselves to be beaten down to £200 when their original quote may well have been accepted.

After getting the first quote ludicrously high at the hotel, the girls went to the other extreme and quoted only £10 for a pile of dirty laundry at a fishmonger's shop. They could have got a lot more.

The guys got their marketing strategy right by knocking on doors in the local streets and offering to clean duvets. The girls got piles of shirts and underwear to wash.

Two shirts went missing and Sir Alan Sugar fined the girls £50 reducing their profit to only £195.55. Renaissance beat them with a profit of £328.

The girls squabbled in the boardroom like washerwomen until Jenny chose to bring back Lucinda and Shazia for the final session.

Jenny accused Shazia of lying, complaining and manipulating other people without the viewers being provided with any evidence to back up her claim.

Shazia had gone back to the house to try to find two irons, leaving the laundry and providing someone to blame for the clothes getting muddled up. Although Jenny had sent Shazia back, Sir Alan thought that Shazia was in the wrong for causing the mix-up and fired her. Even with weeks to edit the VT, TalkBack were unable to present events to justify his decision. One of the best candidates had been fired.

The Adrian Chiles show on BBC Two included Sir Gerry Robinson and Michelle Mone as guests. They and the audience agreed that Sir Alan had fired the wrong person.
